Author Interview

Tell me about yourself. Where are you from?

MT: I’m Canadian, married for twenty-two years to my high school sweetheart, and we have two teenage sons. I’m an introverted, avid reader who loves music and plays the piano. I’m shy by nature but, surprisingly enough, I enjoy public speaking and karaoke.

What genre do you read? Who's an author you read? Name your top 5 authors.

MT: I read most every subgenre of romance, especially contemporary, paranormal, and historical. Some authors I enjoy? Karen Marie Moning, Sally MacKenzie, Julia Quinn, Sarah J. Maas, Sherrilyn Kenyon come to mind, but there are too many to list. Seriously.

Favorite sports.

MT: Not a big sports fan… unless we’re talking about sports romance, then I’m a huge fan of football, hockey, and baseball. In real life, I cheer for the Toronto Blue Jays (that World Series loss was painful), and I love going to ball games. I’m a Buffalo Bills fan, mostly out of loyalty to my husband, and I’d love to see the Bills play in person someday. “Go Bills!”

How long have you been writing?

MT: I’ve been writing forever—or at least it feels that way. I wrote a lot of poetry when I was a kid and young teen, then moved on to short stories, then eventually started (but never finished) several novels. I finally completed my first complete book, a novella called Dream Hunter, around 2012 and published it in 2014. Since then, I’ve written and published seven full-length novels and a box set featuring all five titles in The Magicals Series.

How did you come up with the ideas for your series?

MT: The idea for Fairy Godmothers, Incorporated began while I was writing Book 4 of The Magicals Series. I introduced my trio of fairy godmothers in A Fairy Godmother’s Redemption, and I quickly realized they deserved their own stories and happily-ever-afters…

How do you celebrate finishing a book?

MT: On Release Day, I celebrate with cake. I started this tradition so the rest of my family would get as excited as I am when I publish a book. My husband is very supportive, but it can be a challenge to engage my teenagers. And I love cake. Carrot cake, cheesecake, birthday cake… any kind of cake.

When I released Formula for Fate on October 28, I celebrated with a homemade lemon loaf based on a recipe from Plated Cravings (I skipped the lemon zest, but it was still lemony perfection).

As an author, what would you choose as your spirit animal?

MT: This is an awesome question—I never thought about having an author spirit animal before so I had to answer this one. As an author, my spirit animal would be a butterfly. Coincidentally, I just re-designed my author logo and guess what—I used butterflies. This is fitting because butterflies symbolize transformation, resilience, growth, hope, and beauty through change.

My new author tagline is “Challenging destiny. Finding true love.” I choose it because my characters all share a common theme of forging their own paths—usually going against the grain to do so. That’s why the butterfly resonates with me.

Who has been the biggest supporter of your writing?

MT: My husband is definitely my biggest supporter. He understands that writing is an important creative outlet for me. He doesn’t question my marketing and promotion spending. And he even helps me brainstorm ideas!

How do you name your characters?

MT: Naming characters can be a huge challenge. I use baby name websites (even though I have to dodge the baby-related ads that follow) and resources like Behind the Surname to find the best fit. I also Google the full name I choose to make sure it doesn’t belong to a real person because, as the classic disclaimer goes: “Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.”

AA: Thank you for being here with me, Melissa
