Week Blitz and Giveaway: The Safe Room by Sarah A. Denzil

Thriller

Date Published: 09-10-2026

When I was fifteen years old, I made a mistake. I trusted the warm smile of a stranger called Peter Harlow, and accepted a ride home in his car.

It would be the last moment of my life I’d ever feel safe again.

The trauma of what happened that night will never leave me—and it was only the beginning. For the last nineteen years, I’ve been trapped in a nightmare of blocked numbers, violated restraining orders, and the compulsion to scan every face in every crowd, waiting for the day when his will be among them.

But I've also spent the time preparing. My home has become a fortress, with reinforced doors, perimeter cameras, and a safe room in the cellar. I've even taught my seven-year-old daughter how to call for help. When I finally have to face Peter Harlow again, I’ll be ready.

Or so I thought.

Because on the night of a furious snowstorm, a terrified stranger arrives at my gate. Emily is barefoot, bruised, and desperate for help—claiming her husband just tried to kill her.

To let her in from the storm would mean breaking every rule I've made to protect myself and my daughter—but could I live with myself if I didn’t?

But what follows is everything I've lived in fear of for all these years. First, the lights go out. Then, the internet dies. Next, the phone line goes dead—and finally, I find myself trapped inside my own safe room, watching through a camera feed as the man who stole my life for two decades walks the halls of my home, playing happy families with my little girl.

I built this fortress to keep him out. Now, it’s the only thing keeping me from protecting my child.

The Safe Room is a heart-stopping psychological thriller by bestselling author Sarah A. Denzil, the "mistress of twists." Essential reading for fans of Alice Feeney, Freida McFadden, and Caroline Kepnes.

Freedom’s End is a mythic sci‑fi/fantasy saga about a reincarnating rebel fighting to break cycles of oppression across lifetimes. Born a slave in the mines of Septra, Paintr rises again and again—across bodies, eras, and worlds—to confront a necromancer who seeks to enslave every sentient mind. Blending science fiction, dark fantasy, and supernatural western elements, the story explores identity, liberation, trauma, and the cost of reclaiming one’s soul. With its emotional depth, genre fusion, and expansive worldbuilding, Freedom’s End speaks to readers who love character‑driven epics, mythic resonance, and stories about resilience in the face of impossible odds.

Excerpt

Alone

We were pulling back in teams of two after a raid on a village, and I wondered aloud in the gray night, “Why do they fight?” I wasn’t expecting an answer, but my partner drew close.

“Perhaps to protect their homes.”

I didn’t understand. “Home?”

She glanced at me with sadness in her eyes. “Home is your family.”

I still didn’t understand. “Family?”

“Those you love.”

“Love?”

We walked on in thoughtful silence for a moment, and her eyes were distant when she answered quietly, “Love is something worth dying for.” We continued walking, then she paused and put a hand on my shoulder. “Worth living for.”

Quotes

“Love is something worth dying for... worth living for.”

“We are Galach; we are warriors.”

“My blood is your blood.”

“We are one, you and I.”

“The idea of freedom burned in me more fiercely than my hunger to kill.”

“I was going to be free, no matter what it cost.”

FOREWORD

Joe Bill Campbell was my professional mentor and law partner four decades ago. He had mentors, too, from his early years as a law-yer, godly men and great lawyers like Reginald Ayers (Protestant) and Justice Charles Reynolds (Catholic), whom he quoted often to me. He passed along their advice as earthly gospel, stories of honesty and integ-rity and superior legal ability. We talked a little back then, but not a lot, about faith and religion and God. Mostly, we would discuss and handle our clients’ cases. However, he always advised and encouraged a posi-tive way forward; and in hindsight, I can see those paths were formed by Christian morals and righteousness. “OK, John, now move on,” he once told me after I complained about the sharp practice of a particular lawyer in a particular case, and he meant, “what are you going to do now to resolve that case in a fair way?”

Joe Bill handled many big cases, some with significant wider

consequence in affecting the development of the law, some with sig-nificant public interest, and most with significant consequence to the litigants. He pursued his clients’ interest realistically and with confi-dence and was always looking forward. He advised Governors closely, and worked on boards and commissions, including as the president of the Kentucky Bar Association. He spent his early and middle years solving the problems outside the window. Later, like many thoughtful and experienced people do, he shifted his focus to personal sanctity. Many professionals start and spend most of their years solving the world’s problems, at least the world around us, perhaps because they are easier to solve.

Now, at age 82, Joe Bill speaks often of his faith and Jesus Christ’s

place in his life, not because of any negative piety (as he describes in his Introduction), but from a lifetime of experience, good and bad, and a realization that the time has come to leave nothing unsaid.

The great theologian John Calvin (who studied to be a lawyer)

believed that government, including laws and our judicial system, are gifts from God; and that God’s laws and man-made laws and systems are not antithetical to each other. To the contrary, the just pursuit of the latter is necessary for the realization of the former. Lawyers and judges have a great responsibility to pursue justice and peace and a more per-fect union. The adversarial nature of our legal system does not negate these goals as long as its participants play by “the rules.”

In Kentucky, like most states, we have Rules of Professional

Conduct, and a Code of Professional Courtesy. Lawyers’ responsibili-ties as advocates for their clients, as officers of the legal system, and as public citizens are usually harmonious. But sometimes those respon-sibilities seem to conflict with one another, and “such issues must be resolved through the exercise of sensitive professional and moral judg-ment, guided by the basic principles underlying the rules of professional conduct. Those rules prescribe a “courteous and civil attitude towards all persons involved in the legal system.” (SCR 3.130 IX-X)

The rules require confidence, diligence, and communications;

they demand candor, and meritorious claims and contentions, fairness to opposing parties and impartiality of the tribunal, truthfulness, fair-ness with opposing counsel and unrepresented parties, and respect for the rights of third persons. All of these basic principles, which are gifts from God, allow an adversarial system, and a conflicted world, to func-tion harmoniously in the pursuit of truth and justice. These basic prin-ciples on which our rules are founded, of course, are really Christian principles, which certainly apply to all walks of life, and which are encouraged in this book.

All lawyers, including Joe Bill and me, are imperfect people and

sinners who can do better. Jesus came to save lawyers (and others), not to condemn them (John 3: 17), by promulgating the Golden Rule of “do to others as you would want them to do to you.” Joe Bill wanted me to be smart, fearless, courageous, honest, fair, by adhering to principle rather than to the whims of perception. None of us get this right every day, but this book of devotionals might help keep us on tract.

Interpretations of scripture differ, and Joe Bill would have no hard

quarrel with that. Here in this book, however, he gives insight and argu-ment for Jesus Christ’s bridge to life in the practice of law and elsewhere. You might suggest another analysis of one of these basic principles. Good! Just think about it, justify it, cite your authority and sources. But know that there is an objective truth to the big questions, and not just a subjective standard. This book, at the very least, gives us a chance to grapple with our beliefs and hopefully arrive at The Truth. There is such a thing. We each do not get to determine that truth but, rather, just to discover it.

As the great philosopher and lawyer, Sir Thomas Moore (as quoted

in this book) prayed, “Lord…stand beside me in court, so that today I shall not, in order to win a point, lose my soul.”

Through every devotional, Joe Bill's mission remains the same: to honor his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and fulfill God's purpose for his life by helping others discover the joy, wisdom, and peace that come from living according to God's Word.

Release Date: September 15

Meet Jessica Jude:

Jessica Jude writes emotionally-charged kissing (among other things) books about royals and the elite. Her aim in all of her stories is to make you fall in love with the characters and use up box after box of tissues. Her characters are strong and independent, who make plenty of morally gray decisions. She likes her women fierce and her men possessive.

Her favorite scenes to write are arguments. She's been known to stir up drama in her own life when she gets bored, and her family is glad she has an outlet for her occasional Blair-Waldorfism. She lives in a big old house in the midwestern United States with her high-school sweetheart. She has dreamed of being an author since she was six and wrote her first book about a girl named Mary who got lost in the woods. Mary was eventually found, but sadly, the book was never published. Jessica is a homebody who loves to travel, a coffee candle junkie who doesn't drink coffee, and a very-loud-at-home introvert.

CASSIAN

I’ve loved Vivienne Wilson for so long, I don’t remember what it feels like not to. Not that it matters.

She’s my best friend’s sister. She’s off-limits. And now, she’s engaged to marry a man who can give her everything I can’t. A title. A future. A life that makes sense on paper.

I’m only the estate manager’s son—temporarily running Belgrave Park while my father recovers—and doing my level best to survive the autumn without losing what’s left of my sanity.

So I do what I’ve always done.

I stay quiet.
I keep my distance and pretend it doesn’t carve out my heart to do it.
I’ll give her every last thing she needs.

Even if it kills me.

VIVIENNE

Getting married at Belgrave Park is supposed to be a dream. It’s everything my family has ever wanted for me—an impeccable match, a perfect wedding, a future that fits neatly into the world I was born into.

There’s just one problem.

Cassian Cordero is everywhere. In the stables. In the library. Across the dinner table, looking at me like I’m something he’s already lost.

He’s my brother’s best friend.

My first crush.

The only boy I’ve ever loved.

And the last man in the world to ever be mine.

Because no matter how close we get—how long his hand lingers, how quiet the world feels when it’s just us—he never crosses the line. Never says the things I’m desperate to hear. Never gives me a reason to believe this isn’t all in my head.

I said yes to a man I don’t love, because if Cassian wanted me, he would’ve chosen me by now.

A fake engagement to the hot sheriff who escorted me to family camp? Weirdly delightful.
Failing to tell him that my family is a bunch of professional thieves? Small oversight.

I left the Callahan family business years ago. These days I’m a law-abiding citizen. A photographer who takes nothing but pictures. A man who’s learned not to get greedy for anything… or anyone.

But my family hasn’t gotten that memo, so I expect my week at family camp to be filled with guilt-trippy attempts to lure me back into the fold.

Until Holden Axford comes along… and everything goes axe backwards.

Winsome’s gorgeous sheriff was supposed to be nothing more than a one-night-stand.
He doesn’t have a clue why I’m dreading this week, but he takes his protection game seriously.
So when he thinks I need a rescue, he steps in and declares himself my fiancé… and I’m too busy swooning to argue.

Now Holden’s sharing my bed, stealing kisses like Callahans steal Rembrandts, planning a camp heist (for fun, obvs!), and charming my family of criminals.

Our motto is ‘Callahans don’t get caught’ but nobody warned me about catching feelings.

Unfortunately, secrets don’t stay buried forever. And when someone forces the Callahans toward one last impossible job, protecting the family I love means becoming the man I swore I’d never be again.

But if Holden learns the truth about my past, it’ll be goodbye fake engagement, goodbye sheriff… goodbye heart.
