Review Tour: The Love Equation with review by Meg Benjamin

THE LOVE EQUATION

by Meg Benjamin

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

BLURB:

They’re both unlucky in love. Can they find the equation for the perfect mate?

Celine Murphy has had it. Her current boyfriend has broken up with her by text. That makes three boyfriends who’ve turned out to be losers, including one who left for Antarctica. She’s decided to go for an online matchmaking service, but as a mathematician, she wants to minimize her own faulty choices and let an algorithm make the selection.

At the same time, musician Delaney Boone has come to Austin to mentor “the kid,” a popular actor turned musician. He’s also escaping a broken heart from a failed relationship, and he’s hoping Austin will provide some new possibilities. With those new possibilities in mind, he goes for an online dating service.

Fate—or math—matches these two unlikely lovers. But can they overcome their own doubts to accept another chance at romance? Maybe with the help of an unlikely cupid in the form of Celine’s grandfather, The Judge, and the matchmaking skills of some familiar faces in Konigsburg. And an unexpected dose of cedar fever. It’s Texas y’all.

EXCERPT:

"So how many possibles did you get?” Bonnie asked over her slice of pesto chicken and sundried tomato pizza.

“Nine. So far.” Celine hadn’t checked again after she’d gotten the first bunch. MateFind also allowed a certain amount of scrolling among similar profiles, and she had no intention of doing that. She had enough trouble keeping herself focused on finding Mr. Right.

“So what do you want me to do? Go over the profiles with you?” Bonnie’s smile was slightly tense.

Celine shook her head. “I’ve got a system.”

Bonnie sighed. “Of course you do. And may I say, that sounds ominous.”

“It’s not ominous at all. It’s theoretically sound.” She took a breath. “At least I think so.”

Bonnie picked up another piece of pizza. “Theoretically sound? This I’ve got to hear. Spill it.”

“Okay, I figured I could use a modification of optimal stopping theory.” She paused. “You remember that?”

Bonnie shrugged. “Vaguely. I haven’t seen it since grad school.”

“Okay, applied to dating, it means that your chance of finding the best possible person for you depends on the number of people you reject before finding them.”

“That actually doesn’t sound as insane as I expected,” Bonnie mused.

“It’s not insane at all. I could show you the formula.”

Bonnie shook her head. “Please don’t. The thing is, it sounds a little like saying your keys are always in the last place you look. I mean, of course you’ll reject everybody until you find The One, and then you won’t reject any more because you’ve found him or her.”

“Okay, sure, but as I interpret one part of the theory, if you have an infinite number of possible matches, you should reject thirty-seven percent of them to find The One.” Simple. Elegant. She really liked that interpretation.

My Book Review:

This book was different. Celine loves math. College professor. Used a math formula to find the one. This was definitely different from what I have read before.
