BLURB

Poppy

I was that girl.
I had it all. Confident and happy, I graduated college and began working my dream job. I married my devoted, handsome boyfriend. We bought a house and traveled the world.

Focused on our careers, we’d think about kids later…
‘til the unthinkable happened.

Now I’m all alone and slowly discovering my fairy tale life was a nightmare shrouded in secrecy and lies.

How do you move on after such betrayal?
Can I trust in a second chance at a real happily ever after?

Broadie

I was that guy.
I had it all and threw it all away. A renowned surgeon, my career was my sole focus. Yet I had a wife and beautiful children and let them slip away.

I’ve learned the hard way. I’m more devoted to my family than ever.

If only they didn’t live with a new man now.

My ex-wife and I are better as friends,
and my kids are old enough to forgive me.
If I could only forgive myself.
I’m just hoping I can prove to Poppy
that despite my past, I’m worth taking a chance.

EXCERPT

“Well, well. If it isn’t the Broadie Weston. Renowned general surgeon and frequent winner of Richmond Magazine’s Annual Top Docs in Surgery award. I wouldn’t have thought you’d know the way here to the cafeteria. Did someone escort you here?” Jarod snickers.
“Ha ha. I come to the cafeteria.”
“Oh yeah? When’s the last time?”
I actually have to stop and think. But it isn’t because I think I’m too good to come here. It’s just more convenient to run in and grab a coffee or fix something off of the buffet in the doctors’ lounge before heading back to work. Not to mention, I skip a lot of meals in this line of work. “It was about six months ago when I missed lunch because a case ran long.”
“I’m just shitting with you, man. How’ve you been?”
It’s odd, really. Jarod Snow and I have worked together in our surgical practice alongside five other surgeons for years, but we don’t tend to see much of each other unless we’re in a meeting due to our overlapping surgical schedules. “I’m good. Just busy. Finished a scheduled hernia repair. I thought I had an hour before my next case. But the OR called. They have an ER case that’s pressing. Wanted to grab something before I head back in.”
“I don’t know how you do it, Broadie.” Jacob shakes his head.
“What? Your schedule is just as insane.”
“No. It’s not. I turn cases down when it gets too much. I’ve trained people not to come at me for more. But they know you’ll do whatever it takes.”
This statement has me pausing for a moment. He’s probably right. But it’s just the way I’ve always operated. Literally. I never want to keep anyone waiting, and in this line of work, time can be crucial.
“Hi, Dr. Weston,” a young brunette in navy blue scrubs greets from the other side of the salad bar.
Jarod snickers, reaching for a packet of salad dressing.
“Good afternoon,” I answer with a smile as I grab what appears to be a chicken salad sandwich wrapped in cellophane. I have no earthly idea what her name is
“Hell. I just got back from vacation with the family. I haven’t managed to get my mind back in work mode. I definitely wouldn’t be able to keep up with your pace.”
“Where’d you guys go?”
“Jamaica. It was amazing. But any island is that way for me. Sun, surf, and all the fresh seafood you can eat. I haven’t finished my first full day back, and I’m already trying to figure out how to get back there.” He chuckles.
We head to the refrigerator to grab water when I notice a striking blonde in a long white lab coat standing in line for the cashier. It’s as if I’m unable to turn away. Is she new to St. Luke’s? I’d undoubtedly remember meeting someone who looked like that.
She’s probably about five foot eight and has blonde hair pulled back in a loose bun. Her skin is fair and other than her glossy red lips, she doesn’t appear to be wearing a lot of makeup. She’s holding a plastic container and what seems to be a bottle of lemonade. Her face is expressionless as if she’s lost in thought.
“Who’s that?”
“Who?” Jarod answers, startling me. I hadn’t realized I’d asked it aloud. He follows the trajectory of my gaze. “Poppy?” His voice carries a tone of disbelief about it.
“Who?”
“Poppy. The pharmacist.”
“When did she start working here?” I reach into the glass case for a bottle of water as a chuckle rumbles behind me.
“Are you for real? Probably not long after you. She’s worked here at least eight or nine years.”
I stop dead in my tracks. “No.”
“Yes. Have you been working under a rock?” He shakes his head mockingly. “You’re ridiculous. You are so fixated on your work you’ve probably talked to her a dozen times and didn’t know it. Add to it, you usually have your head buried in your phone… or you’re talking shop to someone. You’ve probably been sitting right next to her in a meeting and didn’t pay any attention.”
Hell, am I that bad?
There’s no way I would’ve been in the same room with that woman and not noticed her. “I usually only get Frank or Marshall when I call the pharmacy. How could I have missed her all of these years? Maybe she only works the evening shift.”
“Yeah. Well, they consider you a pretty big deal around here. There’s probably a sign on the wall over the phone that says to send all of your calls directly to the big dogs.”
“Whatever. I’m not a bigger deal than anyone else.”
“Right.” He nearly chokes on his sip of water. “That’s why the administration is constantly putting on the heat to get you to take the Medical Director position.”
He’s not wrong. But I have worked hard to build a solid practice over the last ten years. I know the key to a successful career is compassion. Some of my partners could stand to go back to residency. A lot more is required of a surgeon than an expensive education and a God complex.
“Hi, Dr. Weston,” a giggly blonde dressed in white scrubs greets.
Unlike the previous nurse who said hello, this young woman’s nametag happens to be facing me. “Hi, Brittany.” Her giggles seem to intensify as I walk past her.
“If this is the way it’s going to be every time you come to the cafeteria, could you warn me before you go next time.”
“Shut up,” I chuckle. Looking ahead as we make our way to the checkout line, I notice a radiant smile overtake Poppy’s face in response to something the cashier has said. Jesus. She’s luminous. Unless she’s recently died her hair blonde, there’s not a doubt in my mind I’ve never seen her before. She outshines everyone else in the room.
It’s at this exact moment the beauty in question looks up at me, and our eyes connect. My breath catches in my throat as her deep blue irises seem to penetrate right through to my soul.
What the fuck is happening to me?

A Man of the Month
Christmas in July Series Novella
Author: LM Fox
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Tropes: Unrequited Love/Small Town Beach Romance
Release Date: July 31, 2023

BLURB

Matt

Returning to my hometown to help care for my ailing mother
wasn’t on my radar at age twenty-eight.

But neither was Ellie Albright.

This small seaside town and its obsession with Christmas
had me packed and ready to leave at a moment’s notice.

Who knew a trip to the corner convenience store
could make this holiday grump want to grovel?

Because this girl is all I can think about,
and I’m not wasting my chance this time.

Ellie

It’s Christmas in July in Candy Cane Key.
However, winning Best on the Beach is the only thing
on my wishlist.

Definitely not my blazing hot high school crush
turned firefighter who’s come back home.

July is tourist season for our little beach town.
The entire community enjoys a lift in sales
as travelers visit for sun, surf, and holiday silliness.

Yet it’s not as easy when your place of business
is a run-down gas station.

But I’m keeping my eye on the prize.
Not on Matthew Hightower.
That’s one gift even Santa can’t deliver.

This steamy novella is a return to hometown,
unrequited love, small-town beach romance
with a guaranteed HEA!

This is a standalone, but stars characters from Naughty & Nice,
A 2022 Man of the Month Club Sycamore Mountain series novella.

EXCERPT

Matt
I put my truck in park and hop out, walking toward the door with trepidation. I hope the food tastes better than this place looks.
A metal bell chimes overhead as I open the door. I’m surprised to find the inside is quite different than what greets you in the service area of this place. The area is bright with white linoleum floors and shiny gunmetal countertops. There’s a soda fountain and coffee stations to the left and the cashier’s check out to the right. A portly appearing older gentleman appears to be reading the newspaper, sitting on a stool behind the counter.
“Hi. Are you Elliot? I’m working with my brother this summer and he sent me to pick up lunch for his crew.”
“Ah, Harry your brother?” he asks around a toothpick dangling from the corner of his mouth.
“Yes, sir.”
“Well, any brother of Harry’s is a friend of mine. I’m Jo.”
“Matt. Nice to meet you. Oh. Salty Jo is you?”
He grins, and I instantly have the feeling this man is a fixture in Candy Cane Key.
“I don’t recall this place from when I grew up here.”
“What’re you? Thirty?”
“Close. Twenty-eight.”
The bell chimes again, and I notice customers meandering around the place. No one seems the slightest bit concerned about the condition of the place. I’m sure they have to pass inspections with the health department, but I still can’t help being a tad concerned about eating lunch from a place like this.
“Well, we’ve been here as long as you’ve been on the planet, son. Although it probably looked a bit better back then. Time and multiple tropical storms have taken their toll on the place. After a while, it gets to feel silly sinking any more money into it. But your brother has come to our aid more than once for the important stuff.”
This makes me smile. My brother really is a good dude.
“Speaking of your brother, I guess we need to keep his boys fed.” Jo removes the toothpick that remains in place throughout our conversation and points toward his right. “Elliot’s over there. In the deli area.” A mischievous smirk curls the corner of his mouth.
What’s that about? “Thanks.”
“Nice to meet you, Matt. Hope to see you ‘round.”
I turn in the direction of the deli and feel my stomach grumble as I’m hit with the aroma of fried chicken. Now I live in a mountain town in North Carolina where home cooking is a staple. So for the scent of these gas station offerings before me to cause me to salivate says something.
Bending forward, I take in the options within the glass case. There are perfectly prepared pieces of chicken, both on and off the bone, macaroni and cheese, green beans, collard greens, baked apples, and an assortment of pies. Hell, they even have banana pudding here. As my eyes travel to the back of the display area, I find I’m drooling for an entirely different reason. A set of shapely calves, thick thighs, and the hottest backside I’ve ever seen is bent over before me. This girl is leaning into the oven while her tiny cut-off shorts ride up her legs, causing my dick to twitch.
Hell, is she on the menu?
As if on cue, she stands to her full height. She’s probably about five foot five, with generous curves in all the right places. Those perky tits have to be at least a C cup, if not more. They are perfectly proportioned to her rounded hips and trim waste. Her thick auburn hair is pulled up in a messy bun, covered with a hair net. Yet, I can’t help picturing it tumbling down her back toward that fantastic ass. Shit. I don’t remember anyone in Candy Cane Key looking like this when I lived here. Well, maybe one girl, but she was just that. A girl. While this one is all woman.
I barely finish my thought before said stunner turns to face me. While I stand here with my mouth hanging open at the beauty wielding silver tongs before me, I’m met with the biggest green eyes I’ve ever seen. She simply gives me the once over as if this happens all the time. This curvy girl has my mouth watering when it suddenly hits me.
Wait. Do these guys come here for the hot chicken or the hot chick?

Each day I long for the forbidden.
Dreams like seeds planted in poor soil.

My future has been sown since I was young, and now the man I’ve fallen for is off-limits.
Not that he'd give me the time of day.

My brother's best friend puts out fires by day, and ignites unfamiliar feelings by night.
How do I pluck these desires before they overtake me?

I'm choosing to stay positive. Live joyfully, like a sunflower.

If only someone like Alex could adore me as I do my faithful blossoms.

Alex

My life is nearly perfect.
Great job, hot girl, and amazing friends.
So why do I feel off?

I'm not looking for more. And if I was, the last thing I'm allowed to consider is Tuesday Palmer.

If only she hadn't put me under a spell with her bright smile and radiant personality.

But restraint is the name of this game.

EXCERPT

Alex

“Whoa, whoa, whoa. What’re you doing?“
“Getting ready for bed,” she answers matter-of-factly, still wriggling in her shirt.
“What? You sleep in the buff? Never mind. Don’t answer that.” I don’t want to know. I’ll never get that vision out of my head.
“I don’t sleep naked. But I don’t want to sleep in my bra.”
Fuck. And now I’m thinking about her tits.
“And my shirt smells like old beer.”
“Were you mixing beer and fruity drinks?” No wonder she’s a mess.
“No. Xane spilled it on me.”
Fucker.
“He offered to lick it off.” She laughs.
“I suggest you stop talking, or you’ll have to put yourself to sleep with one arm stuck in your shirt because I’m going to be busy ripping that asshole’s tongue from his face.”
A mixture of a giggle and hiccup escapes, and I quickly reach for the trashcan.
“Are you going to be sick?”
“Nope,” she says, still squirming inside her top.
I place the trashcan down and head for the closet, where some of my T-shirts remain. Returning to Tuesday’s side, I sit her up so her back is to my chest and help to free her remaining arm. “Sunny, slide your bra straps down. I’m going to slide this shirt over your head, and we can get your bra off after you’re covered.” Hell. The mere notion of taking her bra off, covered or not, has gotten me to full mast.
“Okay.” Her minty breath dances over my face.
Once Tuesday is settled, I pull back the sheets and scoot her into bed. “You sure you don’t feel sick?”
“Nope.” Hiccup. As her breaths get heavier, I grow wary about leaving her. What if she throws up during the night? She’s barely taking up any space in this queen-sized bed, so I slide in before I can contemplate what I’m doing.

Her pastimes are traveling to new and favorite places, trying new foods, a swoony book with either a good cup of tea or coffee, margaritas on special occasions, and watching her kids participate in a variety of sports.

She has spent the majority of her adult life working in emergency medicine and her books are written in this setting. Her main characters are typically in the medical field, EMS, fire, and/or law enforcement. She enjoys writing angsty, contemporary romance starring headstrong, independent heroines you can’t help but love and the hot alpha men who fall hard for them.
