Tell me about yourself. Where are you from?
MM: Thank you for having me! My name is Mal, and I’m 33 living in Southwestern Ontario with my husband of ten years and our two dachshunds, and four sphynx cats.
What genre do you read? Who's an author you read? Name your top 5 authors.
MM: I love reading fantasy- whether it’s dark, romantasy or epic, I love dark romance and horror! During the winter months I do find myself craving books by Elsie Silver! My top five authors right now are; Navessa Allen, CJ Leede, Chuck Tingle, Josh Malerman, Sarah J Maas.
What book are you reading right now, and what do you like about it?
MM: I’m finishing up Alchemised- THIS BOOK HAS CHANGED ME. Dark, brutal and my goodness Helena and Kaine will live rent free in my mind from this day on.
How long have you been writing?
MM: I’ve been writing fiction since grade school, but I started being professionally published in 2017.
What is your writing process like? Are you more of a plotter or a pantser?
MM: Honestly I think about this a lot- I’m a bit of both. I usually write scenes and chapters in my notebook first, and then come back to it later to write it out in word. I find I flesh out and build on what I write that way. I also know the big scenes in my work in progress and the pantser comes in connecting those plot points.
How do you celebrate finishing a book?
MM: I always order cupcakes or cake from our local bakery, and usually have signings lined up to celebrate the book going out in the world!
Who has been the biggest supporter of your writing?
MM: I’m incredibly lucky that my family, friends and my husband have always been my biggest cheerleaders, along with my readers old and new! I’m so thankful for every one of you.
Can you describe a typical day in your writing life?
MM: My days look like this. In the morning I walk my dogs, and do my workout which usually takes me to 10-10:30. After that until lunch I work on my WIP. In the afternoon from 1-4 I rest due to my chronic fatigue syndrome. A lot of this time is napping to recharge for the evening. Then at night I try to write in my notebook so the next day I have the ball rolling. My chronic illnesses demand that I have balance in my writing life to not overdo anything or get burnt out.
Mallory McCartney currently lives in Sarnia, Ontario with her husband, their dachshunds Link, and Leonard and their sphynx cats Luna, Legolas, Ivy and Lily.
