Corruption. Mutiny. Absolute villainy was occurring within the walls of his beloved establishment.

Jonathan Tessier had little reason to complain of late. Profit margins were rising, his customer base was expanding, and the recent annual health inspection had wrapped up swimmingly with no findings. After years of fatiguing work and plowing through stress, things were supposed to be looking up for his pride and joy, the Taverne Tessier.

However, walking down the street on this early autumn morning, he was feeling neither proud nor joyous. He could see his restaurant across from him as he stood waiting at the intersection, its pristine exterior of royal blue and beige surrounded by trees of warm hues. When he first renovated the place, he had aimed for a clean and regal appearance inside and out, so even if he could not boast of its size, the feeling of elegance, class, and beauty would still be conveyed.

Jonathan did not recognize the names belonging to two out of the three critics, and he would not discredit their credentials for it, but he gawked at the third.

Lala Sweet. The Lala Sweet. Impossible.

The bottom right drawer of his desk contained a trove of newspaper clippings, printouts of online articles, and mementos of great accomplishments by esteemed culinarians. Little reminders of what he himself wanted to achieve. The top celebrity gourmet chef in Ameza with the endearing name provided more contributions to his collection than anyone else.

His veritable admiration for her far exceeded how ridiculous he normally would have thought her name to be. Praise for her restaurants and the unique taste of her cuisine had only escalated the past couple years, and that put her further out of his reach.

There was absolutely no way she would make the time to visit such a tiny, insignificant restaurant as his. Not a chance.

But what if this was the reality where it could happen? Perhaps there was that slim possibility he had underestimated the capabilities of the associate who cared to relay this information to him, as he had been inclined to do with most of these people. If the contents of this email turned out to indeed be reliable, Jonathan would just as vehemently refuse to forgive himself for letting this golden opportunity slip through his fingers as he would despise feeling a fool for being so gullible.

A glowing review from the one and only Lala Sweet would propel him into the renown he had been hungry for his entire career.

Such a grand reward was worth the minuscule risk. He replied with a declaration of his gratitude, a promise to connect the associate with his fellow Mercenaries, and an affirmation that he would be ready in time for their visit.

Maybe things, one by one, the mystery of the thefts and his restaurant’s reputation, were beginning to sort themselves out in his favor.
