EXCERPT:

As Scott moved on to help Lily carve something reminiscent of a lopsided cat face, I found myself admiring his naturally easy-going nature and seemingly endless patience. The realization that I was genuinely enjoying another man’s company washed over me.

It had been a while since I let my guard down to admire someone this way. I hadn’t even fully done that with Rudy, and I’d known him most of my life. Although a small part of me whispered that maybe I hadn’t trusted him fully because I’d known him for so long. Maybe, that same part of me coaxed, I was finally beginning to heal and was ready to move on.

Later, as I stood in the foyer readying my children with jackets with Scott helping to tie shoes, I was marveling at how easy everything seemed to be, how it all seemed so right—us together, readying the kids to leave, and pondering a life where this was my reality—a knock sounded on the door.

“Oh!” I flattened my hand against my thundering heart. “That was unexpected.”

Scott smiled at me as he rose to his feet. “I’m not expecting any guests, are you?”

I held my palms up and out. “Don’t look at me. This isn’t my house.”

“I guess that means I’m on door duty then.” He winked, sending a little flutter to my heart, and reached past me to open the door. “Well, that’s even more unexpected.”

My brows knit together as he pivoted to the side, and I looked past him to an empty porch. “Maybe it was a ding-dong-ditch?” It was the season for tricks, after all.

Scott shrugged, leaned out to take a peek, and then looked back at me. “Most likely. But as long as it’s not a flaming bag of…” He glanced at the kids then. “I probably shouldn’t give them any ideas.”
