Favorite: Book Series Part 1

What are your 5 favorite book series?

I wrote all of the book series I read.  Why?  Because, once I start reading a series, then another one comes out, I may miss it.  This way I know what series I read and which books are being added to the series.  I know I am behind in a few (okay several) series.

Like I said, I have read several series.  For this post, I will talk about my top 5 6series (I hope I can do that).

1.   Fool's Gold by Susan Mallery
-If you know me, than you know that this series has to be in my top 5 favorite.  I am behind in this series and I hate that I am, but I have a small problem.  When I get caught up, I get so mad that I have to wait 6-12 months to get the next one so this year I decided to wait to read them so I could have more than 3 to read.  I need to read #16, Kiss Me (#17), Thrill Me (#18), and Marry Me at Christmas (#19) (I will put in the titles in a little bit).  There are other series by Susan Mallery I love, but Fool's Gold will always be my favorite.  I want to read her new series, Mischief Bay, but I have not had time to.

2.  The Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel by Jennifer Bernard
-I am going to say it again.  If you know me, than you know that this series has to be in my top 5.  Hello, my husband is a volunteer fireman!  I do know I am planning on reading her new series called Love Between the Bases about baseball players.  It's about man in uniforms!!  All of Me (#1) came out on May 26.  Caught by You (#2) does not come out until December 29.  A little bit late Christmas gift?  Yes!!

3. Lonesome Point, Tx by Jessie Evans
-Back when I was reading the 3 books in the Fool's Gold series, it was about cowboys!  I fell in love with cowboys and I knew I would love this series.  Now I did not start at book #1 (Leather and Lace), but I started with book #5 (Chaps and Chance).  I have read book #6 (Ropes and Revenge).  I plan to read the beginning of this series.
I need to read Leather and Lace (#1), Saddles and Sins (#2), Diamonds and Dust (#3), Glitter and Grit (#4).

4. Piper Anderson by Danielle Stewart
I have read Chasing Piper (#1), Cutting Ties (#2), Choosing Christmas (#2.5), Changing Fate (#3), Finding Freedom (#4), Betty's Journal (#4.5).
-I am behind in this series.
Settling the Score (#5)
Battling Destiny (#6)
Saving Love (#7)

5. Thunder Point by Robyn Carr
I have read books #1-8 (The Wanderer, The Newcomer, The Hero, The Chance, The Promise, The Homecoming, One Wish, and A New Hope.  But, I need to read Wildest Dreams (#9)

6. Parable, Montana by Linda Lael Miller
I have read this entire series!!!
Big Sky Country (#1)
Big Sky Mountain (#2)
Big Sky River (#3)
Big Sky Summer (#4)
Big Sky Wedding (#5)
Big Sky Secrets (#6)

I would love to know what your favorite series are.  Comment away. Please.

I am going to have a Part 2 of this since I have added more series to this list.
Happy Reading!

Reading Challenges- Almost Summer

For this review, I chose "Almost Summer" by Susan Mallery.  This is #6.2 in the Fool's Gold Series.  My full reviews are on Goodreads (my screen name is cx3ane).  On Goodreads, I am in a Challenge to see how many Susan Mallery books I can read for the year.  Read about it here.

"When it's Alstair's time to leave, will his brief visit turn into a lifetime stay?"  Right after the cover (I read the Kindle version), there are 3 paragraphs.  In the third paragraph, you will see the above question.  What do you think?  Do you think Alistair will stay?  Before you started reading, what are your thoughts?  After you finished the book, now what are your thoughts?

Spoiler Warning: If you have not read this book, stop!  Read the book before reading the rest of my review!!

The first time that Paige McLean met Alistair was at Simon & Montana's house.  Paige volunteers Alistair can stay with her (I am not going to tell you the reason- Read the book!).   I think the reason Paige did this had a lot to do with her Great Aunt Sophia.  Her aunt passed away 6 months earlier.

I love the chit chat that Alistar & Paige have when she is trying to get him into her home.  He is about to pass out.  She is trying to get him to talk about whatever she can.  She learns somethings about him like he has met Prince Harry, he doesn't play polo well, his father knows the Royal Family, his father is an Earl, Alistair is a Viscount. Alistair says to Paige "My Lord is traditional, but unnecessary."

I love how Chapter One ends- "And to think she'd assumed that today was going to be a very ordinary day."  I think one should never assume anything.  Maybe I watch too many episodes of NCIS & I get this from Special Agent Gibbs!  I have learned not to plan my days too much because something normally happens than I am upset that I could not do A instead of B.  Another part I love is how Alistair said to Paige "You're the angel."  It was due to the fevers he had with the illness (read to find out!).

"Well, it's the kind of place that welcomes everyone.  We take care of our own.  Word got out that you were here and sick and the town responded." - I love this.  I want to live in Fool's Gold.  Oh, Susan, sign my family up.  We can be packed in no time!!  I do not know my new neighbors.  I have met 2-the one across the street & the one behind us.  I already knew the couple on the corner because I went to school with their daughter.  The others I am clueless about.  The one on the one side to us I am not sure about.  He almost took my door off on my van.  He was speeding to get into his driveway, which is not even a driveway.  He parks along the side of the road in his driveway, but on the road.  Understand?  He has a garage, but does not park in it.  So, I have not met him, or the other one across the street, or the one on the other side to us.  I want people like in Fool's Gold where they care, where they help you.

I am kind of like Paige.  Paige has never been anywhere.  I have traveled, but I have not lived anywhere except for the County I was born in.  I have been here my entire life.  I was born in the same town I am living in now.  As a child, we moved 3 times (not far from one another either).  As an adult, I think I moved 7 or 8 times, but never too far from the last time.  We just moved at the end of December after being where we were for 12 years.  The longest I lived anywhere in my Adult life.  I love how Paige gets so excited about her traveling one day like when she was talking to Alistair & she said "Knowing in my head that everyone has a different life experience is one thing, but actually getting to talk to people, to see life through their eyes, so to speak, fascinates me."  This is how I feel about my children.  Seeing it through their eyes is the best thing.  Especially if it is the first time they see something.

When Simon talked to Alistair, he "had made the town sound like a paradise.  A close-knit community where neighbors took care of each other."  Alistair did not completely believe Simon, but now after seeing the refrigerator full, he does.  This is where we learn more about Alistair.  He lost his child- his baby girl.  Alistair has been punishing himself.

Paige learns of a Sara from Alistair talking in his sleep.  Sara was his wife, who died in a car accident along with his baby girl.  They were having lunch in the yard.  Alistair was not in the same country when they died.  He has been beating himself up.  Pages later we read these words "Was it never to give his heart again? To never risk the pain? Or had he decided instead to make sure the next time he was there, with his family? or rather that they were with him?"  I wander what Alistair will do the next time!

We meet the librarian, Annabelle Weiss, when she dropped off some books for Alistair to read since he was getting well, but getting bored.  One of the books was on the
Máa-Zib tribe, the first women who settled in Fool's Gold.

Paige tells Alistair that the Spring Festival is tomorrow.  With the 2012 Fool's Gold Country Cowboy Calendar, we would know that the Spring Festival is May 12.  You can get the 2012 Fool's Gold Country Cowboy Calendar either as a Wallpaper or as a Windows Gadget, which both of these will tell you items like this!!  Go get it!  About the Spring Festival, there was a lot of things to see like booths selling jewelry, all kinds of food!!  A parade!  Alistair did learn that the soap he has been using at Paige's is Goat soap & it is very mild plus useful for several skin conditions.

Alistair realized that "Paige had offered him more than a bed for his body-she'd given him a refuge for his soul.  Her gentle kindness had made him realize it was time to look forward.  While he would never forget those he'd lost, he was finally ready to start living again."  Alistair had been working so much since he lost his wife & child that he was not able to face everything until then- at the Spring Festival with Paige's help.  "He realized that he hadn't been just been fighting the measles and exhaustion.  His illness had gone much deeper- down to his heart."

I love how Alistair was helping Paige see her dream- traveling, but she was afraid to leave because of losing her Aunt so soon.  He told her that she will get there, but in her time.  Sparks flies between these 2!!  You could tell the entire book!  The way they teased each other.  After Alistair move into Simon & Montana's home, they both missed each other.    Alistair told her that "I know what I'm talking about.  I've spent the last few years beating myself up for being gone when I lost my family.  I've been unable to release the past and move on.  You've helped me get unstuck.  I want to return the favor."  Alistair wanted to do something for Paige in return for her helping him get well so he helped her plan her trip.

When Alistair saw Simon, Alistair asked him questions about if he missed the travel.  Simon asks Alistair to be his another pair of hands, but he said "I'm not ready."  Simon told him that he is blaming himself for not being there.  Simon believes that even if Alistair was there that he "couldn't stopped her from crossing that street."  What is it that they say?  Sometimes fate is going to happen.  No matter what.  No, not fate, but it was her time to leave this earth.  Simon says to him "I believe things happen for a reason.  Had I not been injured, I would never have studied medicine, never become a surgeon.  I wouldn't found my destiny."  Simon wouldn't also be married to Montana & having a baby with her.  Think about it?  If Simon was not a surgeon, then he would never of came to Fool's Gold for those bad patients.  Therefore, never meeting Montana.  I fully believe this, too.  If I was not injured, I would not have had Ethan.  I would not been on leave from my job.  I would had been working 50+ hours & not had the time or energy to do anything.  Is there something in your life like this, too?

Alistair asked Simon "How did you know about Montana?"  I love this question.  Simon answers him "She allowed me to fell again.  She gave herself so fully, I couldn't resist responding in kind.  I wanted her from the second I saw her, but what I didn't realize was that I also loved her from that first moment.  It took me a while to figure it all out.  I nearly left her.  What a mistake that would have been.  Without her, there is nothing."  I love that Susan is going back to "Only Yours."  It helps us remember the previous books. Something we might of forgotten!

Alistair thought the following- "What would it be like to have someone like that? A woman he loved so much he couldn't leave her?  But what about what she deserved?  Could he forgive himself enough to give her all she needed?  Or was the kindest act to simply walk away? I knew when I read these lines that Alistair was thinking of being with Paige.  I was thinking he would take her with him.  Being that she wanted to travel & his job was all about traveling, they would be perfect together.  They can go home to Fool's Gold for breaks.

My favorite part of "Almost Summer" is at the end of the book.  Alistair tells Paige "I'm telling you that I love you and I'm doing a very good job of it."  "I love you, Paige.  You have shown me what was missing in my life.  What I tried my best to avoid.  I couldn't understand how Simon could give up his work for a woman, but now I see what he was trying to tell me.  That loving Montana make him better at what he does."   Alistair wants her to travel the world with him.  Then, they will come home to Fool's Gold.

I hope you enjoyed my review of "Almost Summer."  This is a great book & an awesome series!
Melissa

Reading Challenges- Summer Days

I really loved Summer Days!  Susan Mallery did it again!  Another great read!  This is a great book that can be read along with the Fool's Gold series or alone.  If you are looking for a good/great romance book, then this is it!  A great beach read!  I wish I could read a book on the beach, but I have to settle for a rainy day

When I first met my husband, I was told that if he takes care of his mom, then he is a keeper.  Well, Shawn did take care of his mom & he is a keeper!  Rafe takes care of his mom!  Rafe Stryker had to return to Fool's Gold because of his mother.  He would do anything for her.  He did not want to go back there.  Why?  (Read the book to find out)  Heidi Simpson finally has a home of her own at Castle Ranch.  Her grandfather, Glen,  worked in the Carnival & they moved from town to town.  She wanted Castle Ranch.  She loved her home.

Spoiler Warning: If you have not read this book, stop!  Read the book before reading the rest of my review!!

Love how the book starts with Rafe meeting Athena, who was in the middle of the road, blocking Rafe's Mercedes to pass.  Do you think she knew what he was doing to Heidi?  Heidi's grandfather stole $250,000 from May so he could get the cancer treatment for his best friend.  May was thinking she was buying Castle Ranch, which was where her & her family lived long ago as she worked as a housekeeper & the owner promised the house & everything to her when he died.  May says "This is where we were happy as family." (page 59)  I think May is trying to recreate happy family memories.  She does not speak to her daughter.  I think she desperately wants that time back when all of her children were in her lives & in each other's lives.  It is very important to her.

I love Mayor Marsha!!  "Fool's Gold needs men like you. (Rafe)" (page 96)  She is right, but is he going to be taken?  I love how Mayor Marsha knows all!  She reminds me of Gibbs from NCIS, only my favorite show ever!  Gibbs knows all, too.  Do they both bug the town (Mayor Marsha)/office (Gibbs) or do they know how to get information from others without that person knowing what they are doing?

Ethan says "People say that a lot around here, and yet they never seem to leave.  You might be more 'back' than you think, Rafe." (page 123)  Isn't that what Josh said?  He never left!  I am sure there were others besides him.  Tucker's assistant (I can not remember his name) was in town on Janack's business, but I don't think he ever left.  Did he?

Best Glenn quote is "I'm not.  I promise you that,  She (May) gets to me and I can't let her go.  I don't want to lose her, Heidi.  And I won't.  Trust me.  Just Trust me, little girl." (page 144)  I can understand why Heidi did not trust her grandfather.  He taught her that love wasn't real, but those who did fall in love were suckers.  Poor Heidi! Thinking & believing that love is one way, but then to be told by the person, who taught you about love, that he is wrong what love is, has to be hard.

Heidi talking to Rafe "You're a prude.  You're embarrassed by what Clay does so you don't talk about it." (page 146)  I like Heidi because she tells it as it is.  She reminds me of my sister!! Rafe thinks if his siblings are not making money, then they are wasting their life.

Best Charlie quote is "That's generally how it (kiss) starts.  She's my friend.  Don't make me hurt you." (page 156) Charlie talking to Rafe about Heidi.  Girlfriends will always look out for one other when it comes to guys.  When a guy hurts their friend, that guy better not be around!  Another great Charlie quote is "But, you're stuck with us.  We're like weeds in the lawn.  You might think you've gotten rid of us, but we just bounce right back."  (page 346) I absolutely love this quote.  Girlfriends stick together!!  Always!

Best Nina quote (Nina is Rafe's Matchmaker) is "You're wrong.  Love isn't about being sure. Love is about risking it all.  The only way to be truly in love is to give with your whole heart.  To put it out there and be vulnerable.  To offer all you have without knowing if it will be enough.  Love is standing naked in front of the world and announcing 'this is who I am' then waiting to be accepted or not."  I love this quote.  She tells Rafe as it is, too.  She is right!

Best Rita's quote (palm reader & friends with Heidi) is "To get your heart's desire, you're going to have to be willing to take a leap of faith.  To be vulnerable."  I truly believe this quote.  Rita read Rafe's palm, but I am not going to tell you what happened.  Instead I will share a story with you all.  In College, I had a palm reader read my palm.  I was told not the next guy, but the following guy is the guy I will marry, we will have 1-2 kids.  The following guy is the one I married.  If I did not get hurt (long story), we would only have 2 kids.  Ethan is our miracle!  Has anyone had their palms read?

I left a lot out on purpose because I want you to read the book!  When I tell you Summer Days is good, I mean VERY GOOD!!  I am looking forward to reading it again!  If you have not read any of the Fool's Gold books, then you can start reading this book now.  It is not like other series where you have to read them all to understand things.

Keep on Reading Fool's Gold!
Melissa

P.S. Something for you:
1. Why did Rafe Stryker did not want to return to Fool's Gold?
2.  How did Heidi meet Rafe?
3. Did you feel bad for Heidi or Rafe about the situation they were in?
4.  Do you believe that what Glen did was wrong? Why?
5.  How does Heidi know Rita?
6. Are you on Team Heidi or Team Rafe? Why?
7.  Did you love the ending?

My Favorite Series by Susan Mallery

My Favorite Series by Susan Mallery is Fool's Gold.  Susan Mallery is a New York Times Best Selling Author.  She lives in Seattle with her husband & her toy poodle.  If you want to read a series, then this is the series to read.  It is that good.  You will fall in love with the characters & the town.  Susan has it set in a town called Fool's Gold, CA.  I love Fool's Gold.  Not sure if I would like living in a small town with everyone knowing everything about myself & my family, but I would love getting some help with everything.  You just left the hospital or had a baby, then the town would be there helping you.  I love that!  You just broke up with your boyfriend then the girls are there cheering you up.  How nice is that?  You are sick with a cold.  The town helps you out.

Here are the books in this wonderful series:
If you purchase one of Susan's books, please leave me a comment.  I would love to chat with you about that book!

So, on to the books!

Photobucket
The third book is "Finding Perfect".  When Pia O'Brian's best friend dies, Pia expects to inherit her cherished cat, but instead she leaves her 3 frozen embroys.  Pia decides to become a single mother, but she meets a guy the very same day.  I loved the character of Peter, a sweet little boy that Raoul meets during a school's fire.  Pia has grown up a lot since we have found out how she was like in high school.  She hid behind her teasing others so others would not find out the truth about
her.  Pia sacrifices herself to her friend's embryos implanted.  She is terrified at the idea of being a mom to 3.

Photobucket
The fourth book is "Only Mine" is about Dakota.  Dakota meets Finn, who is looking for his twin brothers, who left college & Alaska.  Finn is not happy about them being in a reality show that is being filmed in Fool's Gold, CA.

Photobucket
The fifth book is "Only Yours".  This is about Montana & Simon Bradley.  This book is really good & the ending is so good.  This is definitely a must read!

That's why she ditched a frustrating legal career to open her own store in Fool's Gold, California. The Christmas Attic celebrates everything that's magical about her favorite season. Business is booming, and as a bonus, gorgeous army doctor Gabriel Boylan has offered to help out during the holiday rush.

Gabriel's memories of Christmas past contain more sour grapes than sugar plums, thanks to a drill sergeant father who ran his home like a boot camp. Spending the holidays with his family while he recuperates from injury sounds as appetizing as last year's eggnog. Still, there are some enjoyable distractions in town, including sunny, sexy Noelle...and the red-hot mistletoe kisses they can't stop sharing.

Gabriel didn't think he was made for happily-ever-afters. But when fate hands you a love as sweet and surprising as this, only a fool could refuse.."  I want to move to Fool's Gold.  Being disabled, having a disabled daughter, a son with asthma & migraines, I could use some help at times.  Where is a town like this?  Anyone?  Add in 2 huskies!!  Did I tell you one of our huskies has separation anxiety?  Zeus is a great dog, but he hates to be alone.  Montana, I need your help big time! The other husky is a bit---HYPER!!  Bolt is a good dog.
