EXCERPT

“What am I doing?” I growled through my frustration.
“Looking at me like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like you hate me, but you don’t. I know you don’t.”
Her fingers curled into my shirt, and my eyes dropped to the hold she had on me. I couldn’t trust myself to look at her, or the torment I knew I’d find in her face. But her shaking breath returned my attention to her lips, the bottom glistening wet from her tongue that ran along its length. Why wouldn’t she let this go? Let me go? Why’d she have to force this confrontation when we could’ve just kept on denying the static in the air when we passed, even at a distance?
Mio salvatore,” she said softly.
It tore me up inside when she called me that, and I couldn’t meet her gaze. I watched her mouth form words that made my chest ache with the same kind of pain quivering through her voice.
“For so long you’ve ignored me. Every time we could’ve connected, you turned your head so you wouldn’t have to see me. But I’m begging you, please. See me now, Luca.”
I pushed from the wall, wrenching from the grip she had on my soul. She captured what was left of it two million minutes ago with a look, a heart-stopping, wide-eyed, pulse-pounding look. I’ve made myself hate her ever since, and we both needed a reminder of my revulsion.
“Oh, I have, Vivienne. I’ve seen you grow from a caged bird into this delicate woman hiding in that church and behind smiles at the shelter. Acts of absolution for the mob princess to feel better about Daddy’s work.”
“Go to hell.”
I caught her wrist a second before her palm made contact with my face. Twisting her arm around her lower back, I tugged her to my chest. She was pissed, spitting fire from cold eyes when I hid my feelings under a mask of indifference. I couldn’t care about her. The way things were going with this family, she wouldn’t make it to her twenty-fourth birthday. The boss’ daughter was not my concern. Finito. Fatto. The end.
“Grow up, Vivi. Learn how to use the Glock before strapping it to your thigh and staring dumbstruck at the men gunning you down. Look around, open your eyes. Simone’s dead and that means there are new rules. A new world order. No one is protecting you now.”
I thought she’d hiss and scratch from my warning. Instead, enough time passed for anger to simmer into something else altogether. Something hot and intense and undefined. Something that felt like once in a lifetime, and really fucking stupid. An illicit chill danced over my skin. I ached for Vivienne, to taste her mouth and the long line of her neck. Our mirrored breathing heaved together as she eased against my grip, molding along the hard lines of my body. We were at war with each other. One minute furious, the next desperate to connect. The reaction was baffling, and I hated chaos.
“Now you’re wrong.” Her whisper wafted along my throat. She was much too soft and tempting, and the dumbest situation I had ever gotten myself into. “You gave me your protection at the funeral.”
I sighed, releasing her. “This again.”
She stepped into my space. “You’re after my truth, and I seek yours. Why did you come for me? You should’ve stayed with my father, or at the very least secured Stefano or Dante’s safety. But you didn’t. Why?”
As if magnetic attraction forced the connection, she traced the line of my scar—drawing my blood to pool beneath her fingers. I closed my eyes for a second, then retreated from her touch.
“You don’t know what you ask for, Vivienne. I’m not who you think I am. I’m not—”
“Honorable?”
Amongst other things.
I nodded. “And you would do well to remember the warning.”
She sought the truth. I gave it with a scowl, leaving her alone even when the monster within me wanted her to follow.

EXCERPT

There was little time to contemplate the past or the forbidden emotions she stirred within my chest. The future rose in a swell of fire and brimstone, and it was my job to make sure we saw the other side. A miracle that. Vivi was headstrong and insistent on leaving the compound for fucking church and lunch. Friends. I scoffed at the notion, denied the request, and then burned with anger when she dropped to the wooden planks in front of my bared feet. Just as I imagined her every night with my cock in hand.
“Vivi,” I warned in a tone unfamiliar even to me. She tempted—seduced me with full lips, a light plum color unique to her. She licked them. Inching closer to my thighs, she gripped the fine cotton of my pants, and I grew instantly hard. Her gaze blinked to my dick, the obscene outline pressing against the zipper. Jesus Christ, that mouth and how it parted.
I grabbed her chin, forcing her eyes to mine.
“Please, Luca. I must get out of here. I’m suffocating under all this tension, my family and what they want from me. We’ll be gone for just a few hours. Three, four max. Please.”
Disregarding her request, I gave her a different answer and watched her squirm around the words. “I like you in this position. I like your mouth more and how I could squeeze my cock into it. What I don’t want, Vivienne, is your plea. The only time you’ll beg is when I’m inside you, when my fingers are deep in your ass, and I lick your cunt until you scream a demand. You may beg to come, but you may not grovel like this for me or anyone in this household. Don’t look surprised, little bird.” I pinched harder, then rolled the tiny dimple indented in the middle of her cleft under my thumb—a soft gesture in a moment that threatened my sanity. “You’re a beautiful woman falling to her knees like a sinner in a confessional. I’m not your God. I won’t provide absolution when I want to ruin you in a way your innocent mind could never contemplate. I’m a man, Vivienne. A man tempted by the ripe lushness of your offering. I can only abstain for so long before I’ll take what I want, when I want it. Wasn’t that proven in the garden?”
Her lips moved, but her answer was whispered so low I missed the words. “Again,” I prompted, bending to her as she rose higher. The sweetness of her breath hit my cheek, and then I ran my nose along hers—the bone that was more prominent now than it had been a month ago. She smelled fresh, like vanilla and the wind rolling off Simone’s garden, an intoxicating combination that was deeper behind her ear. The impulse to taste trembled through my limbs and I had to draw away only to be captured by her eyes.
“It was Eve. She gave to Adam and he ate. Would you take from me, Luca?”
I’d meant Simone’s garden the night of her funeral, but her answer warmed my blood just as it did when I tasted hers. She belonged to me then, even when I tried to deny the bond. I was tired of denying myself Vivienne. But the consequences of having her were a cruel sentence. The truth was, I couldn’t have her and do my job. I couldn’t. They were a contradiction. My first promise, one I made before I met the princess, was to the king himself. As much as I cursed the declaration, it was said, and I was a man of my word. I would give my life for hers, but my soul belonged to the devil. Nothing could change that now. Not even the angel who enticed me daily.
“Would you take from me?” she asked again, this time with an addition that ignited my skin on fire. “If I offered myself, or if I didn’t.”
Barely controlled rage shook my fingers as they coiled into her hair, pulling until she was captive in my hold. Her eyes were sharp, cunning, burning with the secrets I wanted and she wouldn’t give. With her frosted glass irises, high cheekbones and a mouth that tempted me as much as her body, she was no one and everyone all at once. She was everything. Everything I couldn’t have.
“Listen carefully.” I dragged in a sharp inhale, squeezing her tighter. “When I want your pussy, you’ll spread your legs with eager desperation. I won’t have to ask. You’ll know and you’ll offer your cunt and your lips and your heart because they belong to me. But I will never take, and if anyone ever so much as touches you without permission, they’ll cease to exist. Do you understand?”
“You would kill for me?”
“I would do anything for you, Vivienne.”
The darkness in the confession was underscored by something desolate and wild. Bad things happened when I lost control. I’d never sink into insanity with her, but I would for her. We breathed through the moment with the sun beaming in the windows and lust heating her eyes. I crossed the line.
Vivi must’ve seen the change in my expression or felt the loosening of my hold. Her fingers wrapped through mine, reestablishing the fierce grip as I again tried to relax the tension.
“Murder is a sin. Your soul—”
“Is already lost and nothing for you to worry about.” As I pulled away, she scrambled to follow, and I tugged her to her feet.
“I do and I will. I heard what you said. I belong to you and if that’s true, I have every right to fight for you through eternity.”
“I was making a point,” I said, barely exasperated. I’d give her credit for listening, but in hindsight I should’ve kept that fact to myself. “And it’s a good thing then that we already live with the devil and I don’t have to worry about disobedience or God’s punishment. Go get dressed.” I couldn’t look at the scrap of fabric barely meeting her thighs. She called them biker shorts. I called them immoral.
“Luca?”
A tempting blush stained her cheeks pink, and I knew I swung the pendulum on her emotions. I was all over the place with her. One minute cold, the next simmering with fury and need, but I always ended with regret. Sighing, I turned so I wouldn’t see pain flash in her eyes.
“My job is your safety. Get ready and I’ll make a plan to ensure I can keep that promise while you confess your sins and eat with a friend. We’re no different now than we were yesterday, Vivienne.”
I felt her presence for minutes. I even sensed the words she hurled at me in silence. Bastardo. Idiota. I was all those things, but the last one said out loud was the truest of them all.
Bugiardo.”

Excerpt

Every three-point-five seconds my thoughts drift to Maisie and the contract I delivered two days ago. I haven’t heard a response, and why should I? We never exchanged numbers. She’s had no way to reach me while I was out. We’re nothing but colleagues with a history. But that doesn’t stop me from missing her, wanting her. It all pisses me off. I have work to do and life to deal with. I knew I didn’t have time for a complication, but I can’t stop thinking about her sweet face and gorgeous ass.

I force myself to focus on the Spears case and the latest injunction Marjorie Blume has filed. She’s muddying up the waters by leaking reports of MoMo’s lengthy conviction record. What he thought was past tense is front and center. It’s my job to retrain the focus on Blume versus freedom of speech, and not his penchant for cars that don’t belong to him.

I drill into the details. Each hour spent living through Blume’s history has my temper rise by ten degrees. At the end of the day, I’m hot. She’s not a saint, and it sticks in my craw she’s made a living making people believe she is.

Focusing on Wentworth for days and Blume for what feels like ages has my blood pressure off the charts. Life is full of complications and I’m in a punishing mood because of them.

“Mr. Kavanagh,” Lisa says from the door. “It’s seven and I’m heading out. Do you need anything before I go?”

“I do—” Ms. Walker arrives behind her with the devil in her eye and a fairly well-hidden smirk. She peeks around my secretary to stare me down with a secret only the two of us share. “I do not,” I amend.

“I brought the research you requested, sir.” Maisie holds out an envelope—a familiar one, stamped confidential.

My gaze jerks from the document to her mouth: plump lips brightened with peach gloss. Christ. My chest aches. Goddamn heart. I smooth it under the pretense my tie is out of line.

“Enjoy your weekend, Lisa. I’ll finish with Ms. Walker and close up,” I say while my gaze remains trained on Maisie.

I wave her in as Lisa escapes before eight on a Friday night. As the automatic lock latches on the door, we stand and stare with silence swirling around us like the promise of what’s to come. Evening sun warms my office, but Maisie’s nipples pebble into distinct points. They draw my attention to the ripe lushness of her breasts pressed together in a skintight button-up and I can’t think of anything but her naked flesh. Because I’ve seen it. I’ve watched her writhe in ecstasy, squeezing the life from my dick.

In an instant, my mind retreats from the memory and drills into sharp focus. There’s no reason why she’s over there and I’m here and we aren’t touching. “Did you read it?” I ask.

Maisie nods. “I did. And I signed it too.”

After this shit with Wentworth, it’s important that we’re on the same page, that she’s honest with me about her feelings. She must give permission. Say it out loud and reassure me I’m not the only one suffering. “Tell me, Ms. Walker. What do you want from me?” My voice is low and jagged from need. Something my body knows all too well as it stiffens at the mere sight of her.

“I want you to f*ck me like your dirty little secret, Mr. Kavanagh.” She breathes out my name as if it’s a wish, a fucking plea for my cock to meet the back of her throat.

Lord, have mercy. Who am I to deny her? If she wishes to know the type of justice I deliver, then so be it. “Come forward for your sentence, peach.”

Excerpt

A COUPLE OF minutes later, I enter the library double doors. I’ve worked my ass off for every volume lining the walls. There’s something about holding a leather-bound book—the weight, the texture of the page, the subtle hint of coffee and ink. Drake thought I was crazy to invest in paper, but today it’s been proven—every dollar spent is worth its weight in gold.

As I turn the corner of an aisle, Maisie laughs. The sound is low, vibrant, the auditory translation of a simmering sun sliding through the horizon. Sunset in Venice. Monet’s masterpiece brought to life in the color of her voice.

From behind the end cap, I look. Blindsided. That’s what I am when I see her. The curves, the hips, that ass, her face, her ivory skin and those full lips. I forget everything. All of the worries swirling in my mind disappear. I focus on her and it’s a relief. A long hiss of air loosens from my chest and I’m breathless.

She stands on the stepladder, stretching for a book. Her arm reaches higher until the pearly white flesh of her midsection is on display as her sweater rides up. I stare, silent and stupid with incomprehensible words flashing neon in my brain. You. Me. Dinner. Date.

Why? Why does she make me insane?

The tips of her bare toes hardly hold her in place. There’s that laugh again, a short burst as she teeters on the last rung. Her footing slips. Arms whirlwind to find balance or a shelf to grab onto, but instead find nothing but air.

I rush forward. Her back slams into my chest with a breathy “oomph.” Then my hands are on her. Christ. My fingers burn where they curve into her hip. The line of my forearm molds around her stomach, pressing her against me. When her spine stiffens I say, “I’ve got you,” and her head falls to my shoulder. She sighs. She sighs and I hold on tighter.

Seconds. That’s all we have. Maybe five. The subtle hint of peaches and youth, the scent of summer and innocence reaches my nose. I breathe her in for one second, my exhale moving the soft wave of her hair in the next.

“Mr. Kavanagh.”

My ribs constrict around my lungs, squeezing the air out when her hand slides over my arm. Scraping her nails over my skin, her fingers stumble over my watch until finding mine and tangling. The instant ache in my groin shifts my attention from our joined hands to her ass. The same ass that rubs against my zipper. Shit. My dick swells against her backside and a low moan vibrates through her. Goddamn, a moan.

What the hell am I doing? I should leave. The inappropriateness of this situation is not lost on me, but I can’t move. Too intoxicated by her to do anything but squeeze her closer and berate myself for doing so. I’m her boss. She’s . . . Jesus Christ, she’s everything I shouldn’t crave yet I do. For a hundred foolish, selfish reasons, I want this woman.

She may make me insane . . . but I’m not crazy. Not yet anyway. And to keep my sanity intact, I grip her hips and push her forward, forcing some distance between us.

Maisie turns, flattening her shoulders against the bookcase. “Thank you. For saving me.” She clears her throat and waves at the ladder. “Heights are not my thing.”

In another second, her eyes dart from my thighs to the engorged cock in between them and then to my chin. Her gaze flies to the shelves behind me and then up, up to the rows of books. “Such a great library. I wouldn’t have thought . . . Not in a firm this size, not that it’s small. No, God no, it’s not small. Not by a long shot. I can see that. I mean, I know how big. No, that’s not right.” She shakes her head and starts again. “I know how stiff . . . uhm, staff . . .” Her voice trails off when she sucks her bottom lip between her teeth.

A breathless laugh erupts from her mouth. And that fucking smile.

“That was all wrong,” she says, grinning like a loon.

Perfection. She is that—flawless and undeniably beautiful. Real.

I clench my teeth and block the urge to reach for her. Bring her flush with my chest, to feel her soft curves wrap around me.

“Mr. Kavanagh.” Her hand shoots out. “We haven’t officially met. Maisie Walker, newest and best—I assure you—legal assistant in the office. It may not seem that way. The brief—this morning. However, I promise my review is top-notch. All morning I’ve done nothing but think about it. The contract. I’ve worked on you in my mind. Ugh, the research. I’ve worked on the research.”

I stare, dumbfounded, at her perfectly painted pink nails and her long fingers stretched between us. That breathless laugh sounds off again and then she whispers so low I barely hear the words, “I don’t bite. Not too much anyway.”

My gaze jerks and narrows in on her sparkling blue eyes just before our palms connect. Fuck that tremor racing down my spine.

“What did you say?” I step in, hovering over her until she has to crane her neck to stay connected with my eyes. Her hand is gripped in mine. Trapped. Just like I feel when we’re in the same room.

“I mentioned my research.”

“There was something else.”

“No, I was definitely referencing my review. It’s taken all morning and now it brought me to the library. Your very large, well-endowed library. I’ve not encountered one in real life that’s hung in quite this way, only seen them on TV.”

“Hung?”

She bites her lip and the dimple, the one in her right cheek, dips into her porcelain skin and then disappears as she fights a smile.

“Of course I didn’t say hung. That would be a highly inappropriate adjective to describe a library. It’s strung with books, volumes and volumes of big, massive books. Color me impressed, Mr. Kavanagh.”

“Are you able to speak coherently?”

“Absolutely. But you’re standing really, really close to me. And you smell good too. Like cinnamon and leather and big, brutish man. You’re also holding my hand and although I’m not complaining, I have no idea what’s happening right now and I babble when I’m confused. So.”

Almost in spite of itself, the corner of my mouth tips up. “You like my library.”

Maisie nods and uses her free hand to tuck a curl behind her ear, but her eyes never leave mine. “Truly, I do.”

A part of me, the lawyer, wants to tell her how wrong this is, that it verges on a violation of firm policy. Then again, I’m enjoying every word out of her delicious mouth. And as the managing partner, I make the rules.

“Are you flirting with me, Ms. Walker?”

“That depends,” she says in that low breathy voice that gets me hard. “Were you staring at my breasts during the staff meeting, or just appreciating the faux mohair in my sweater?”
